“In 2017, after scoring a video installation for the Venice Bienalle entitled Flora, I experimented with two of the themes from the project which in turn evolved into entirely new pieces. I felt they were so different from the original material that I couldn’t consider them even related. Removed Interludes is the result of taking an original material and pushing it past the recognizable impetus. The first, third, and fifth movements of the piece take a simple plaintive melody and repetitive ostinato but present it in three contrasting arrangements. The second and fourth are violent, exuberant interjections intended to cut through the stability in the others.”
